Epistasis in Epistasis is a term used in the field of genetics and is defined as an occurrence where one gene or more somehow changes or “masks” the expression of another gene. In these cases, the gene whose traits are not expressed is called a “hypostatic” gene, while the other genes whose traits have surfaced are called “epistatic” genes. When recessive alleles at one locus mask the expression of both (dominant and recessive) alleles at another locus, it is known as recessive epistasis. This type of gene interaction is also known as supplementary epistasis. A good example of such gene interaction is found for grain colour in maize. In epistasis, the interaction between genes is antagonistic: one gene masks or interferes with the expression of another.
