Fourier Optics 1 Background Ray optics is a convenient tool to determine imaging characteristics such as the location of the image and the image magniflcation. A complete description of the imaging system, however, requires the wave properties of light and associated processes like difiraction to be included. The purpose of Fourier optics is essentially to calculate and analyze how light propagates e.g. in optical instruments like microscopes, taking into account its wave nature (in contrast to geometrical optics).

This diffraction pattern contains information about the slit in a form in which smaller spatial details the language of Fourier optics, we solve complicated optics problems by summing up many (actually infinite) plane waves with many high spatial frequency components. A note needs to be made about plane wave superposition and Huygens’s principle.

The analyses of the imaging systems can thus be performed and the the performance retrieved. Fourier optics is the field of physics that encompasses the study of light at visible wavelengths but including infrared and ultraviolet portions of the electro- magnetic spectrum as well. Introduction to Fourier Optics (McGraw-Hill Physical and Quantum Electronics Series) by Joseph Goodman (1968-01-01) diffractive optics, Fourier optics and holography, nonlinear optics (second harmonic generation and all-optical switching), fiber optics, acousto-optics, and lasers. Handouts of the notes are provided for the students to allow a faster pace lecture.
